The right outdoor cushions can completely transform your patio seating — but not all are built to survive sun, rain, and humidity. Here's how to shop smart and keep them looking great.

Outdoor cushions are one of the fastest ways to refresh your patio, but they take a beating from the elements. Choosing the wrong fabric means faded colors, mold, and soggy seating after the first rain — so it pays to know what to look for before you buy.

The most important factor is fabric. Look for solution-dyed acrylic fabrics like Sunbrella, which are woven with UV-resistant pigment all the way through the fiber. Unlike surface-printed fabrics, they won't fade even after years of direct sun exposure. They're also naturally water-resistant and easy to clean with mild soap.

Fill material matters just as much as the cover. Closed-cell foam or quick-dry polyester fill dries out fast after rain, while standard foam can stay damp for days and develop mildew. If you live in a humid climate or leave cushions outside year-round, quick-dry fill is a must.

For throw pillows, look for removable, washable covers with hidden zippers. Outdoor pillows in 18x18 or 20x20 inch sizes work well on most chairs and sofas. Mixing two or three coordinating patterns — a solid, a stripe, and a botanical print — creates a layered, designer look without much effort.

Color-wise, earthy neutrals like terracotta, sage, and warm white are trending in 2026 and pair beautifully with natural wicker, teak, and aluminum frames. If you want a bolder look, deep navy or forest green make a striking contrast against light-colored furniture.

To extend the life of your cushions, store them in a deck box or storage bench when not in use, especially during heavy rain or off-season months. A little care goes a long way toward keeping your patio looking its best all season long.
